He wondered if he would have to move her on. She would have to hurry to get down to the kitchens where she worked or the other girls would talk. He heard the soft whispering of silky underwear and the rustle of skirts as the girl got dressed and he saw the pale daylight edging around the curtains, faint and cautious, as if aware it was unwelcome. No matter how much he drank or how far he lost himself to the dark, they were still waiting for him when he came to a little louder, a little more insistent.

It was the only way to get through the day and shut out the demanding voices that plagued him and kept him awake at night. All he wanted now was sedation, an anaesthetised indifference to everything. Orin felt the brush of a soft pair of lips against his cheek, the press of a naked, warm body against his back, but he kept his eyes firmly shut, his breathing even.
